Efrin Becomes Last of Three Rojava Cantons To Officially Declare Autonomy

(ANF) Following Cizîre and Kobanê cantons, Efrin (Afrin) has officially proclaimed the establishment of its government of Democratic Autonomy.

The President of the canton’s Legislative Council, Hêvîn Reşîd, opened the the council session after a moment of silence to remember those who had been killed in the fighting to make autonomy possible. Reşîd greeted all the participants before moving on to the endorsement of a formal declaration of autonomy.

Hêvî Îbrahîm Mustefa was chosen as the president of the canton’s governing council. Mustefa will be the first female president of a Rojava canton. The declaration of autonomy followed declarations in the Cizîre canton on January 21st and the Kobanê canton on January 27th. Each of three cantons is composed of a legislative council as well as 22 government ministries. All three cantons will hold general elections within the next four months.
