News from the Revolution in Rojava and Wider Kurdistan
YPG/YPJ forces have launched an offensive to liberate the Miştenûr district and nearby Miştenûr hill, a strategically important position to the south-east of Kobanê which overlooks the city – according to an article in today’s Özgür Gündem. YPG/YPJ fighters have already cleared ISIS forces from two avenues leading to the hill, and 19 ISIS fighters have been killed in the fighting thus far. The liberation of Miştenûr would make it increasingly difficult for ISIS to keep its presence in the surrounding area and could single the beginning of the end for ISIS in Kobanê .
The beginning of the operation was announced by the YPG Press Center, which declared that its forces were making progress all along the Northern and South-Eastern Fronts. According to the statement:
YPG/YPJ forces launched an operation against the education district in the northern part of the city and completely cleared the area of ISIS following heavy fighting. At least 5 ISIS fighters died in these clashes. On the Southeast front YPG/YPJ forces launched an offensive against ISIS which extended from the Water Tower to the base of Miştenûr hill. ISIS attempted to halt their progress by launching a suicide attack using a truck bomb. However the truck was destroyed before it could reach its target. As a result of the operation the targeted region had been entirely cleared of ISIS fighters. At 11 ISIS fighters were known to have been killed in the fighting, with 6 of the bodies having been recovered by YPG/YPJ forces together with their weapons and ammunition. 3 ISIS fighters were also killed in concurrent fighting near the city’s main hospital.
Meanwhile in the Cizîrê Canton brief clashes took place between YPG forces and ISIS near the village of Maqsuma to the southwest of Serêkaniyê. ISIS was forced to withdraw from the area after two of its fighters were wounded.
