News from the Revolution in Rojava and Wider Kurdistan
The Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) are attacking the Kobanê Canton on two fronts today – according to a report ANHA carried in Özgür Gündem. The clashes took place as fighting continues between the YPG and ISIS along the border of the KRG in the Cizîrê Canton of Rojava. The ISIS has made major advances in Iraq over the past week, capturing Mosul – Iraq’s second largest city – yesterday. Both the KCK and the YPG have pledged their support to defend South Kurdistan in light of the recent advances made by ISIS.
ISIS advanced on Kobanê from both the east and the west; in the east ISIS forces assaulted the village of Gir Sor through the village of Sosik. YPG forces defending the area engaged ISIS fighters as they advanced. 2 ISIS fighters were killed and a number more wounded.
In the west ISIS fighters targeted the village of Keçel from their base in the village of Xerab Eto. In the clashes that ensued at least 3 ISIS fighters are known to have been killed. In response YPG forces targeted ISIS bases in the villages of Xerab Eto and El Cedide, destroying four ISIS centers, disabling one vehicle and capturing another. More ISIS fighters are reported to have been killed in these clashes, although the exact figures remain unclear.
