News from the Revolution in Rojava and Wider Kurdistan
Students in the town of Nusaybin, in Mardin province, have demanded the release of their imprisoned teacher on Teachers’ Day – according to a report from DİHA. Students at Gazi Anadolu High School gathered yesterday, October 5th – World Teachers’ Day – in order to make a statement to the media concerning their imprisoned teacher, Seyfettn Yavuz. The students were joined by members of Yavuz’s family along with Abdullah Gökçe, the local representative of the Eğitim Sen Teachers’ Union.
Yavuz has been imprisoned for two years as part of the ongoing KCK trial, which has been targeted at Kurdish activists throughout Turkey. Mehmet Çiçek, a student at the high school, read off a prepared statement in the name of all of his peers. The statement as reported read thus:
Although he is not here today all of our teachers are here in his place as we celebrate World Teachers’ Day this 5th of October. As students we do not want our teachers stuck between four walls, we want them by our side at school. Our teacher Seyfettin was arrested only for his thoughts and his work with the union and we have not be able to see him for two years. We continue to want the teachers who support us to be freed.
Our teacher who could never begrudge us his smile has been imprisoned for two years. We cannot understand why at a time when educators have such difficulties already our teachers are imprisoned. People should not be imprisoned for their thoughts and their work with unions. Their freedom should not be stolen from them. We want this wrong to be corrected immediately. Because our teacher Seyfettin has been away from his family for two years. This is not an acceptable situation. We repeat once more, as students of Gazi Anadolu High School we want our teacher Seyfettin Yavuz by our side and we demand he be immediately released.
